The story of a "Self Build Micro Camper"
The start of things to come...
Picked up car from an friends barn in Yorkshire, yes a real barn find. quite a few bits missing but a very solid shell. No interior in the rear or door panels front seats in poor shape.
On the way home I started to picture what I was going to do with it?
Wash and Scrub
Car in workshop after washing. Cleaned off blue rattlecan on drivers side, them washed whole car in thinners. (Paintwork was previously re-sprayed with two pack) Very pleased with the outcome. Fitted front wings that came with car. no rear wings though.
Inside - Lets make a Camper
Inside the 95 was a bit of a mess. no trim panels, no rear seat back cushion. suddenly i thought what about making it into a Micro Camper. I did a few basic lists of what I wanted; Leisure battery, long bed (as I am 6’4″), tablet mount, memory foam mattress, a way of covering the windows……
Tidy up the outside.
Outside cleaned up, made the side stripes on my cutter to cover the holes of the missing trim, wheels blasted and painted, domed hubcaps, SAAB v4 decal on bonnet, grill painted up, lights fitted.
New Rear Wings
Good rear wings are hard to find, probably why they were missing. thanks to Mark Ashton of MSA Autobodies and his excellent Glassfiber wings. All done.
One sheet of 18mm Ply Later.
I took the measurements of the 4 panels to Hevey building supplies and they cut from one sheet of 18mm engineered Ply.(£32.00) I had enough cut offs to make the supports for under the Back seat. I used the metal back of the rear seat upright as a template and cut out to shape. I used all the hinges and clips from the original seats. The side panels are made of 4mm card covered with 5mm foam with my 70’s theme upholstery fabric (12Meter’s £16 eBay) glued on top.
Cant find a Rubber Rear Bumper
I Had a real problem trying to get a rubber rear bumper… None around. so i decided to use some of the earlier bumpers and trim I had lying around. most were a bit rough but with a wire brush on a angle grinder managed to make a smooth surface for a coat of black paint (Tetrosyl Satin Black). I cut a decal in grey for the old number plate area. very pleased with the results.
I had another problem no number plate lights so managed to convert a pair of Hella Lorry number plate lights to fit.
Wrap it up
Wrapped the woodwork with grey vinyl, looks great also riveted an alloy plate over the damage to the rear valence.
Comfort First
Made the Cushions/ Mattress, I got out the sewing machine and made loose covers for the Cushions. for the filling I used a king size Memory Foam mattress topper and cut it to size.
Leisure Battery
Fitted a 12v Gel Leisure Battery along with a 50Amp Diode to prevent back charging and drain from main Battery. Fitted panel for Cabin lights, rear LED spots on tailgate, Twin USB Charge points, 12v Socket & Voltmeter.
Kampa Domestic Tailgater Air
After visiting the caravan and motorhome show at the NEC. I saw the Kampa Domestic Tailgater Air, Drive away Awning. an absolute awesome piece of kit. had to have one so did a few measurements and worked out it would fit. also bought the carpet. (Awning £499.00 carpet £32.00).
